What Is Cervical Dystonia?

  • Cervical dystonia (CD) is the most common form of focal dystonia, causing the neck to turn involuntarily to the left, right, upwards, and/or downwards.
  • Rotational cervical dystonia (spasmodic torticollis, rotating the nose and chin in the direction of one shoulder) is the form most commonly seen in this group of conditions.
  • Incidence figures show that spasmodic torticollis is the predominant deviation of the head in more
  • than 80% of patients.

What Is the First Line Treatment for Cervical Dystonia?

  • Botulinum neurotoxin type A, e.g., XEOMIN®, is considered the first-line treatment for CD. This treatment reduces symptoms effectively.
  • Treatment effect usually starts 3 to 7 days after the injection and lasts around 12 weeks on average. However, this is highly individual, so reinjection may become necessary at intervals ranging from 6 to 20 weeks.

How XEOMIN® Works?

In adults with cervical dystonia, nerve signals tell the muscles to contract when they shouldn’t. This can lead to abnormal head positions, uncomfortable movement, and pain.

XEOMIN® is injected into muscles to help block these signals. This can help decrease muscle activity and neck pain.

Some muscles may still contract, but less severely.
