What Is Adult Upper Limb Spasticity?

  • Spasticity is one of several clinical features/motor behaviors that may result following damage to CNS structures involved in controlling voluntary movement. Collectively, these features are known as the upper motor neuron (UMN) syndrome.
  • Spasticity is associated with a pathologically increased muscle tone. This creates stiffness and resistance to passive movement (the word 'spasm' originates from the Greek word, 'spasmos', which means to drag or pull).

5 Common Patterns

Flexed elbow

Bent wrist

Pronated forearm

Clenched fist

Thumb in palm

Causes

  • Stroke (most common cause)
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Spinal cord problems (such as lesions)
  • Cerebral palsy in adults

Manifestation

  • Spasticity may be one of many possible consequences after a stroke.
  • There are a wide range of prevalence data in post–stroke spasticity, from as little as 19% to as much as 98% of patients.
  • The onset of spasticity after stroke is also highly variable. It may occur shortly after the stroke or more than 1 year later.

Symptoms

  • Muscle stiffness (known as hypertonia)
  • Limited range of movement
  • Reduced ability to relax muscles
  • Muscle spasms
  • Changes in limb position
  • Pain

How XEOMIN® Works?

In adults with upper limb spasticity, there is an imbalance of signals from the brain to the muscles, which causes stiffness and spasms. This can lead to abnormal arm or hand positions, uncomfortable movement, and pain.

XEOMIN® is injected into muscles to help interfere with these signals. This helps decrease muscle stiffness and improve your ability to function using the affected muscles.

Some stiffness and spasms may still occur, but in most patients less severely.

Individual results may vary.
